Happy New Year design friends! Ahhh, the beginning of a new year. Feels like a giant sigh of relief. 2021 couldn’t come fast enough! Welcome to the year of good health, good vibes and GREAT design trends! Make a coffee or mix-up a mimosa, we're about to wow you with what's trending this year!

After a trying year, I think it’s safe to say; the home is the sanctuary for our well being. The homes we live in are no longer a brief pit-stop amidst the hustle and bustle. They are now the place we truly reside in. Working, playing, teaching, growing, your new sanctuary for staying safe and healthy. Our homes have an entirely new meaning, and the trends of this new year will bring the comfort we yearn for into our home offices, living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and flex spaces.

Upholstery Can Give Hugs
Yes, you read that heading correctly. We are all yearning for the comfort of a tight squeeze to feel the world melt away these days. For many, the closest we will get is a hug from our upholstered furniture. 2021 will introduce more curved furniture, especially in armchairs and sofas. Plush fabrics and cozy cushions will trickle into your living spaces as well. Get ready to snuggle in for a zoom call with loved ones. Don’t worry, your sofa will hug you back.
Don’t Flatten the Curve
We are starting 2021 with giving a new meaning to that sentence we have heard so many times in 2020. We aren't talking about the pandemic when we mention the curve (in this newsletter), we’re talking about the curve in furniture design! As I mentioned before, curved furniture is all the rage in 2021! Not only will upholstered furniture be curved, but dining tables, coffee tables and even bed frames are also embracing the curvy trend. We’ve linked a few of our favourite, curvy, drool-worthy pieces from CB2 for you to check out!
Why stop there, curvilinear features have appeared in architecture for years so why not add an archway or two into your home!?

Seeking Comfort in Simpler Times
Now that our furniture hugs us providing a soothing comfort, we seek comfort in the activities available for fun. Looking back to a time where movie theatres, shopping malls and bowling alleys did not yet exist, much simpler activities were practiced for fun. Family picnics were the highlight of the Victorian-Era Sunday afternoon. We now call these magical food baskets charcuterie boards… oh yes!

Our modern-day society is resorting back to these simple activities and finding comfort in the slow-paced yet very enjoyable pastimes. Our homes will reflect these new-found hobbies and simpler, slower times. We will design new kitchens around our newfound love for cooking and baking. Designing new spaces to play board games and build puzzles, and designing our backyards for quaint gatherings. We encourage designing your home to fit you like a glove, so every space is a space you will live in and enjoy using!

Nature Designs for Us
Yes, we understand MBD just gave you the encouragement you needed to renovate your home to better suit your needs… we do not apologize! Before dreaming up design boards, let’s focus on the trend that just keeps trending year, after year, after year; Nature-inspired design. We are so drawn to organic shapes and colours seen in our natural environments. In 2021 we are especially finding comfort in nature due to the feeling of serenity and joy it brings us.

Disclaimer: if you do not like the outdoors or the smell of fresh-cut grass, you may still enjoy nature-inspired design.

Some of our FAVOURITE natural design elements include wicker and rattan furniture, botanical prints, organic colour pallets and, last but certainly not least, natural textured tile.
Colour in Unexpected Ways
We cannot forget to mention the colour pallet of 2021, it’s a Yummy one!
Pantone has announced two colours for 2021; Illuminating and Ultimate Grey. Benjamin Moore has chosen Aegean Teal supported by a pallet of warm and familiar tones.
A question we get asked often is “how do I incorporate the new colour of the year into my home?” We’re here to tell you some good news! You do not need to order a gallon of Illuminating yellow or Aegean Teal and repaint your entire home. The best way to incorporate these new on-trend colours is to introduce them in small doses. Team MBD loves adding the colour of the year into homes through accent pillows, artwork, area rugs and even small accents of paint. Get this, our favourite way to add a pop of colour to a home is by painting the interior doors! Do not be afraid, your builder-white office door is begging for a new colour… perhaps Illuminating yellow? Ah-ha, we knew you’d love it!

If painting interior doors is not for you, another on-trend way to add colour to a space is through colour-block murals. More and more are we seeing abstract colourful wallpaper which can easily be painted onto a wall using the colours of the year. This design feature can add a punch to any space!

There are so many ways to incorporate the 2021 colours of the year into your home without changing the whole design.
2021 will be a year of jaw-dropping interior design, we cannot wait to get our freshly sanitized hands into new design projects. All of us at Michelle Berwick Design wish you a happy and healthy 2021!

Cheers!
xoxo
