Hello, welcome back, and Happy New year!!!
2022 came in hot, eh? Like an ex-boyfriend who promised he would change for the third time in a shocking turn of events it's more of the same. Silver lining is I hear by spring we should be in a much better place. Come on Spring!
We started the year off with the airing of our basement reno we collaborated on with the Holmes on Homes Family Rescue show which aired on HGTV in the US and CTV life in Canada. For those that missed it, here is the grand reveal!
The ask: double the living space in this petite family bungalow by finishing the basement. Rooms required: A family gathering spot for movie nights, a washroom with a shower, a laundry room, a home office, a playroom, and a storage. Folks, we ticked all of the boxes.
The elephant in the room: The low ceiling height and folks, we did not have the budget to dig out the basement so we had to work with what we had and therefore used a lot of color blocking and paint going up and over the ceiling. In general, we used many paint moments to keep the eye moving.
The Family room:
Look at this fireplace slabbed in Cambria. It's beautiful, it's practical, it will always look like this with no maintenance. We want to extend a big thanks to our buds over at Hartley built for the custom cabinetry. This will provide the family with the storage they need to tuck away the not so nice items to look at. The sectional provides enough seating for the whole family and carries a normal amount of pillows.
HELLO!
We wanted to greet everyone with a happy and warm welcome the minute they entered the basement
The Playroom:
My personal favorite room and the envy of my own kids now that they've seen it. If you aren't happy in this room I would seek professional help. The rainbow stripes evoke imagination and creation. The slat wall allows the kids to have easy access to any craft materials they need. The hanging chairs.... hello? What kid doesn't want to sit in a chair hanging from the ceiling and spin around while creating their masterpiece?
More custom storage from our friends at Hartley built to stash away the items we don't want to look at. We topped off this magical sundae with sprinkles. That's all she wrote.
The home office: One of the homeowners works from home full time and really needed a space to call her own. If you watched the show you saw "the demon door" scene where she showed us the door to her cold cellar that looked terrifying. The show asked me can you use it in your design? I was sure I could do anything. I'll make it into a desk. But then quickly thought....why are we using an item she was terrified of as her everyday work surface? Anyhoo.... hope we transformed it enough that she is no longer terrified of. FINGERS....CROSSED.
We added some trim to the wall and used some pretty decals going up and over the ceiling again to trick the eye into moving along and not stopping at the low ceiling height.
The Laundry room:
Ok so one issue these homeowners have and we encounter this often is cat litter. Where do you put it? It's accessible by the cat but tucked away.
Please enter our cat door. that the cat can crawl through from the main living space and enter the back corner of the laundry room and do its business. It's a petite space but a functional space with custom cabinetry maximizing every inch of it.
How about that backsplash? fun right?
The Bathroom:
Since this was the most costly room to renovate we decided to keep it a little more neutral than the rest of the basement which could easily be switched up with a paint change. We slabbed Cambria all over the wall os fhit shower and I'm so thrilled with the end result. It's maintenance free and no grout lines so it will look like this forever.
With it still following along this happy/welcoming theme we had "Hey" Laser cut into penny tile as another little moment in here.  We snuck in some extra storage shelves beside the shower for extra towels and supplies. Every nook and cranny needed to be utilized to its full potential down here.
I hope this space makes you as happy as it did for the wonderful family living in this space. We had such a fun experience working with Mike Holmes, Sherry and Mike jr., the production crew, the producers, the networks, and the whole team. They truly are out to help homeowners in need and it was really cool to be a part of that.
Let's all be kind and patient with one another as we brave another wave of covid and hope to be on the other side soon. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel
Hapyy New Year!
I can't wait to show you what else we have in store for you in 2022.
